FOOTSTEPS IN THE GARDEN
There was none of the silence he remembered:
The road, in spate, streamed through trees
Stripping the leaves of their rustling calm
And the thrush did not smash the snailed rockery
As it had that long-hydrangered summer.
The place was changed and he sat, uncomfortable,
Until he heard footsteps on the path behind.
But when he turned there was no-ne there
And all the plants were withered.
